I have to do a static zoom shot tight on a page of text. In editing I see I need to highlight specific words on the page I shot. Is there a way to do that? It is black text on a white page.

There are lots of ways to do that. You can use the Cookie Cutter to make a circle or rectangle around them or you can use Gradient Generated Media to create a translucent overlay to highlight the words. It all depends on what you mean by “highlight”.

I guess what I want is to have it look like on a documentary where they show the page and then either highlight certain words with color or have the rest of the page sort of drop opacity leaving the desired words brightest.

The way I always do this is with Color Gradient Generated Media. Start with the grey gradient and use the rectangle as gradient type then make more points. Here is one that I did for football style highlights. You want to create something similar but without the colored edge. Then place this on a track above your text to allow the text to show through the transparency.

Perfect! Thank you! And thank you for showing me how to do it. You know we work at a visual level and so many posts are hard to follow without the “Show Me” part. Easily worth a thousand words. This job was dropped into my lap and so I have exactly 2 weeks experience with editing so thanks for the patience!

You’re welcome. Yea, I’m a visual learner too so I can appreciate that.
