Movie files in AE – Darker?!
I’ve been working with AE for some time now, and I’ve noticed something about it for the first time: Some of the AVI’s of my project actually appear brighter in my NLE (adn other programs) than in AE…! This is noticeable mainly in fairly low light situation, but still…
Has anyone noticed this before? -

Yeah, it’s from RGB to YUV conversion. AE is RGB. NLE’s are YUV. There can be a handful of ways to fix this. Search the archives on RGB to YUV and back.

Hi Chris, thanks for your help.
I’m seeing posts from people saying how to adjust render settings to work around this, but my goal is to use AAF export to AE, and then render from AE itself…
My question is – What will ultimatley be seen when played on a TV screen? the RGB color in AE or the YUV?

How is it going to tape? Almost all Tape formats I know of are YUV. Usually people render out of AE, and lay to tape off an NLE in YUV color space.
For example when I go out from my DS to AE then back: I render out of the Avid with the output options set to “graphics” which is Avid’s dumb way of saying I’m rendering to an RGB codec. I indeed render to Quicktime Animation codec which is RGB. Then work in RGB in AE. Then save back out using RGB back to Quicktime:Animation. Upon re-importing it to Avid I make sure that the import option is still set to “Graphics” (as opposed to “video” which means YUV). This way the Avid will know it is coming from RGB and will adjust the levels to match YUV. So as long as your conversions are correct, the import/export options of your NLE will deal with the issue.

What if I want to export to DVD, right from AE using the MPEG-DVD Template?
Will I get the RGB results when I play that DVD on my TV?

man, i don’t know. Good question. I’ve always made DVDs by exporting from an NLE as a YUV quicktime and using Apple’s compressor to create the Mpeg files.
