  • Moved Media Cache, now Premiere keeps crashing, how to fix?

Posted by Zach Martin on May 15, 2014 at 5:38 pm

Long time FCP/Avid user, doing my first big project on Premiere CC.

To clear up space on my hard drive, I went to PREFS-MEDIA and moved the MEDIA CACHE FILES and MEDIA CACHE database to my hard drive (G Tech/ 2 TB/7200/FW 800). Now Adobe keeps crashing the second I try to start editing. I’m on a Mac, working natively with DSLR footage and it’s been super fast until now. I was under the impression it was like moving the Render folder in FCP, which I often deleted and rebuilt at the end of a project to save space.

I’m already deep into this project, so what’s the fix at this point and what are the best practices moving forward with new projects? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Zach,

I would try cleaning these files out, it’s possible some were corrupted or indexed wrong in the move.

Seems to have sped back up and is working again, maybe it just needed to re-build? For future reference, that clean function won’t mess anything up?

It won’t mess anything up and Adobe recommends using it once on a while.

Do you not have another internal HDD for the Media Cache? Even USb3 would be better than FW800 though still higher latency than the internal drives.
