Move FX Packages to New Computer
Posted by Ernest Rosado on January 4, 2014 at 12:41 pmHi guys and gals,
My PC crashed (motherboard died out of nowhere), and I’m on a nice fast new PC. I have reinstalled Vegas and all my plugins, but I want to move all my old FX Packages over to the new computer too. I have read about the Vegas Utility, but running it on my old system is not an option anymore. I have the old C: drive hooked up as a USB drive though. Are there files I can copy over to restore these FX Packages?
Thanks!

Actually this data is kept in a combination of the Windows Registry and the file system (which is why Sony wrote a utility). The registry will point to any files it needs. Without being able to get to the registry on your old computer it may be impossible to retrieve this data.

Blech. I was told by two different IT guys that the “image backups” we make daily to the NAS drive would be sufficient to recover anything in the event of a crash. Is there no way to extract the data from that old registry?
Thanks again!

January 5, 2014 at 8:53 amIf it is REALLY an image backup then it will contain everything.. BUT as been mentioned they are scattered in different places…
WIN 7
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM : system32configsystem
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SAM : system32configsam
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SECURITY : system32configsecurity
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE : system32configsoftware
HKEY_USERS UserProfile : winntprofilesusername
HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT : system32configdefaultNever tried to open these directly on another HDD.
=====If the backup is just Data to the NAS then it won’t have system files.
Not sure if this helps but I guess you can try and let us know,,,,,,

They are correct, providing you are restoring them to the same computer. Your problem is you bought a new computer so the system drivers will need to be different.

If you can mount the backup as a drive you could Google “offline edit windows registry” and find several tutorials on how to open a remote hive.
You are looking for:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DirectShow\Presets\FX Packages\The keys will be under there and point to files like:%AppData%\Sony\FX Packages\{key_name}\[filter package name].sfvWhere {key_name} is a Globally Unique ID (GUID) and [filter package name] is what ever name you gave the filter package. You will need to copy those .sfv files as well and put them in the same place on your new computer.~jr
