I am trying to create a simple ‘how to’ video for a client using SnapzProX. When I import the .mov files i have created into FCP they appear fine in quality in the viewer, however as soon as I transfer them to the timeline the quality drops significantly in the canvas. I thought it could be FCP just making them lower quality so they are easier for it to work with however they are very poor quality on the export too! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thankyou

#50 – Quality difference between Viewer and Canvas

Shane’s Stock Answer #49 – Why is the quality different between what I see in the Viewer and what I see in the Canvas?

Well… the viewer is just that– a viewer. It will display anything that fcp will recognize as usable video or graphics. The canvas is a viewer too, but at the pixel dimension specified by the settings of your project and sequence.

For example, if your graphic or footage is much higher resolution than your 720×480 DV sequence, FCP is interpolating down your file to fit the settings of the sequence. Usually this makes it look not so hot. DV is a 5:1 compression working with a 4:1:1 color depth. Your pristine picture images and graphics are being crushed.

(This great explaination comes courtesy of Jim Cookman)

So this might be an example of your sequence settngs not matching your clip setting.

This same problem almost killed me. I ended up having my screen zoomed in when I did the screencap vid (Control + Mousewheel zoom) to get a more clear image.

Thank-you very much for the help. I have tried several sequence settings which have improved the quality some, however I am relatively new to editing, are there any sequence settings you could recommend? I recorded from SnapzProX at 25 fps, I am not sure how to check the resolution it records at though?

    Thanks again

Well, you chose the recording settings in SnapzPro, so that is one way. But if you simply click on the file in the Finder and choose FILE>GET INFO it will tell you. Or in FCP if you scroll to the right in the Browser you will find a column called COMPRESSOR and that will tell you.

If you recorded as H.264 (a Snapz default), you will have to convert to an editing codec, and frame size, if you want to work without rendering. If you did full screen, then this might not be possible….this is stuff you have to plan for.

Welcome to the world of post.
