February 18, 2013 at 3:06 pmI disabled everything and increased virtual ram and it has helped. It was stopping at the opening credits and now it stopped 5 minutes into the film. There is no error message, it just stops rendering while the time keeps ticking.

February 18, 2013 at 4:09 pmWell, it seems it is hardware related then. Is your project being rendered to a different hard drive, or the system C: drive?

February 18, 2013 at 4:12 pmThe data is on an external 1.5 TB drive. The program is on C and I’ve tried rendering to the external drive, C or partitioned D drive. Same result, though with the above changes and removing the key frame shots it may work.

How is the external drive connected? If it’d USB, try copying the files to your internal D: drive. I would only edit from an external drive if it was connected via eSATA or Firewire.

February 18, 2013 at 5:10 pmThe size of the data folder exceeds available hard drive space. It’s more than 600gb, a 90 minute feature. Connects with usb. How do I set up an alternative system?

Does your laptop have a firewire port? A firewire drive would give you better throughput. If not does your laptop have an PC Card slot, you could buy a firewire or eSATA PC Card adapter. If it doesn’t you don’t have any options other than buying a new computer that has firewire or eSATA. These are essential for video editing with Windows; you really can’t steam 600GB of video over a slow USB port.

February 19, 2013 at 2:39 pmEverything I’m reading online indicates USB3 is as good as or better than these other two options. Is there evidence that they are better than USB3 in reading?
I get two types of crashes. Either it says “stopped working” from the opening credits, or sometimes it’ll start rendering and then halt several minutes in.
I’ve turned off all other programs/apps, increased virtual memory, tried rendering video alone or sections of the video, but nothing works. -

Are you using USB3? You didn’t say that you were. Only that you were using USB which I assume is USB2.
Even so, here is the problem with USB in general. It’s a “dumb” interface that requires your CPU to do all of the heavy lifting. Firewire and eSATA are “smart” interfaces that don’t require the CPU. So while USB3 may have a throughput that exceeds Firewire on paper, that’s only if your computer is doing nothing else but copying a file. If, however, your computer is trying to playback video and audio at the same time as transferring the file, then USB is stealing CPU cycles from you whereas Firewire and eSATA would not be.
I haven’t used USB3 at all yet so I don’t have any real-world measurements to share with you. Perhaps your USB3 drive is fast enough and something else is the problem. Is your laptop up to the challenge? Is it a Core i7 Quad Core? How fast is the CPU?

February 20, 2013 at 1:55 pmYes it’s i7-3630QM 2.4GHz, 8G RAM.
Right now I’m searching for only the files that were used in the movie and copying those onto the hard drive. -

That should be plenty of power.

You can do this with Vegas Pro. Use File | Save As… point to folder on another drive and check the box that says Copy Media (or something like that. I’m on my Mac right now so I can’t check). This will copy just the media files that the project uses and consolidate them under the one folder.
