Hi everybody. I have Vegas 8.0c. I also have Vegas Platinum 9. A client handed me a DV MOV file that had been captured in FCP. When I bring that into Pro, I get audio but no video. When I bring it into Platinum, I get both. I have the latest version of QT basic, NOT the Pro.

Since Platinum can figure it out, why can’t Pro 8? Is there a box I’m not checking somewhere?

    Many thanks.

“I have the latest version of QT basic, NOT the Pro.”

QT stopped working properly in Pro 8 a few versions back (blame Apple, not Sony).
You need an older version of QT like 7.6.2, upgrade to Pro 9 (soon to be Pro 10) or do as you’re doing and use Platinum.

Don’t worry – I blame Apple not Sony. That’s why I went with Vegas in the first place.

When I open it it Platinum, it’s squeezed to 4:3. If I go into the Pan/Crop tool and change to “output to source aspect” it goes to 16:9 but still looks squished (like anamorphic?). I would prefer to use Pro 8 (unfortunately I don’t have the money right now to go to 9) because I can only do 4 tracks in Platinum 9.

If I install 7.6.2, I think I read in a previous post by you, Mike, that ITunes won’t work. If I do that, can I just reinstall the latest QT after importing to Vegas Pro or do I need to keep the older version of QT until I’m done editing?

Maybe it’s using a different PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) than 16:9?
Did you try setting your project properties to match the source video (not the same as doing it in Pan/Crop)?

Do you need to give the file back to the client in .mov format?
If not, and you can get the aspect ratio figured out, render it out of Platinum to a format that Pro will recognize without having to jump hoops, thereby saving you a lot of grief.

Mike: Thanks so much! There’s so many little gotchas.

I thought I started the project as an NTSC DV Wide screen. I went in and changed the PAR to 1.2121 and applied. That changed the picture size. But then I had to go to each clip and change the PAR as well. Thanks!
