  • MOV file size issue in Vegas

Posted by Larry Craig on August 19, 2010 at 9:14 pm

Just a heads up for anyone who is using footage captured as MOV files in Final Cut Pro and is planning to use them in Vegas. I recently (painfully) discovered that MOV files larger than 1.6 GB will not load
or display in Vegas. These were files to be edited by a client who uses Vegas. The larger files (over 1.6 GB) supposedly would not even playback in the client’s Windows Quicktime player. As long as your files are less than that size, you should have no problems. Hope this will save someone else the hours I wasted trying various workarounds to no avail. Good Luck!

You have some other issue because I just loaded a 4.8Gb uncompressed mov file – no problem.

    I agree with Steve.
When I videotape graduation ceremonies for the college I work for, they’re recorded through FCP and are, on average, 1.5 to 2 hr. long which is around 25 Gb. in size.
I drop the single file on my Vegas timeline with no issues whatsoever.

I think the issue may have been the recent I-tunes update that caused a Quicktime problem with Vegas playing back MOV files. I could have asked my client to un-install the new Quicktime 7.6.7 and load an older version to fix the problem (as I’ve seen done in other posts)
but I decided that it was up to me to create a workaround. You know how it is . . . it’s never the client’s fault. (wink)

I am not sure if mine is a file size problem.

I am never able to open any .mov files. I have recently purchased a Kodak camera that records in HD and they all plan using QuickTime and Windows Media Player, but when I load them into Sony Vegas 9 – nothing happens. It displays an hour glass cursor and stays that way for hours.

    Sony Vegas 9 – 64 bit
    Windows 7 Ultimate – 64 bit

Thanks in advance for any pointers to overcome this issue.

What model of Kodak camera do you have?
