Mouse wheel MOUSE causing interference on VEGAS even in PLAY mode ! FERRITE CORES
Posted by Peter Derek on February 13, 2014 at 5:21 pmMOUSE causing interference on VEGAS even in PLAY mode !
Recording sound as normal – all working
Play sound all fine
Play sound but zoom in with mouse wheel to widen wave form and hear low level sound interference as I move the mouse wheel – almost like intermittent white noisePlay again and this inteference is on the track!
Change to another pc with same mic and preamp and no fault as I had thought there was a preamp or cable fault as I had heard errors in vo work recorded then noticed the centre wheel of the mouse causes noise – Any one else had this???
Tried moving mouse to another USB port – no change
Tried updating mouse driver – no change
Tried another mouse, interference a little less but still thereSo I Have ordered some clip on ferrite cores to see if that helps
At a loss to know why this is suddendly happening
ANY IDEAS?

February 13, 2014 at 6:55 pmEvery sound card, firewire interface, computer or mixer setup I’ve ever had has had this problem to some degree. If I wiggle the mouse, even if the monitor’s turned off, I hear a little tiny noise through my headphones. I’ve upgraded sound cards, motherboards, everything, but it’s always been there to some degree. I don’t know where the signal is leaking in or from what. Luckily enough, when I don’t pay attention to it, I don’t hear it. It’s never been loud enough that it’s ruined any of my work. And moreso, I don’t find that I’m moving the mouse when I’m doing significant recordings.

February 13, 2014 at 7:19 pmSome time ago, after hassling many low level, -46db , noises AND getting a new audio card, I gave up and got an EXTERNAL Presonus Audiobox. This has killed any surface PC interference and I now chase-down “other” sounds/noise for killing, mostly below -80db. I’ve got a nasty one coming from RF(?) from a modem – ugh…..
Can you determine the “level” of the db you are hearing? I’m guessing that you’ve got a failing audio card or seepage across some of the electronics inside the PC itself.
In any event, I don’t get any mouse zoom wheel interference.

February 14, 2014 at 10:07 amThanks very much for your replies
I am using an external (USB) CENTRANCE mic preamp with input and output sound routed through it and internal sound card disabledThe mouse noise is -18DB and this is recorded on vegas even when it is in play mode. This is currently confusing me also! But clearly as you say there is seepage inside the PC
The same preamp and mic plugged into another laptop is fine and into a tower is fine. This is a fault condition that has arisen recently and I have changed nothing apart from Win OS patch/upgrades.
-18DB is loud enough to make the recordings non useable so I shall have to use another pc until I find the solution. Ferrite cores on the mouse lead may do something but I doubt it. There is something happening inside the PC. Remember the analogue days of crosstalk – well its digital ghost has returned! I shall try recording from vegas to an external HDD to see if that makes a change. Also adjust latency on preamp and may try a powered hub also.

Well it works – Windows had wound up to 100 percent the mic sensitivity so by placing this down to say 60 percent it of course makes the internal circuits less sensitive. Now the mouse noise is so low, it is acceptable I should have checked this first. Strange, I have seen this before when win sound mgmt racks up the record input setting levelHere is an image of the noise

_______________________________________________________________Great! Mine is set at 73%. Let’s hear ( no joke meant there…) if others have reduced their mic sensitivity from 100%?
What noise floor have got now?
Cheers

February 15, 2014 at 2:47 pmHi
It is all hovering about -39 dB ! Quite a change
I have changed the mouse and some seem nosier than others
So stayed with the new mouse and will try my preferred one once the clip on Ferrite cores arrive. But if the interference source is internal to the PC then of course they will not do much, I think – my electromagnetic theory is rusty and without a circuit diag of the pc who knows where this seepage is coming from, through etcThe question is now – how to make sure windows does not change the sensitivity setting when it wishes. I am going to put a link on the tool bar and keep an eye on it. Even de selecting all the advanced settings in control panel/sound I have one pc where I can see the slider moving as I speak! Ok I say, select all and give dedicated control to the app and it still slides!

February 21, 2014 at 1:23 pmLast week I had interference from the mouse so changed it and keyboard and USB ports and added ferrite cores, lowered PC sensitivity to 60 and not 100. All was working great, all silent, then suddendly noise/distorted sound was recorded today.
If you have time to listen to the clip I would be most grateful – if not please see further notes below as FX may now be an issue and that is VEGAS or a settinghttps://www.peterderek.com/?page_id=1054
Is this a latency issue? My studio director said it is latency error
(I have put the sound clip on a non indexed page that shall be deleted in due course – I apologise it is on a web site but I did not know how else to let it be heard here as I do not have another web server).
NOW FX SELECTED BY DEFAULT – I noticed at the time that this fault started, when opening a new track/session I now (never before) have to select to record in MONO once I have armed the track. Why is this. It never happened before, it always opened ready to record in MONO
ALSO basic effects come into play that I have to de select so no fx are in circuit. Before, No FX was enabled at start up.
Deleting these FX and also increasing latency on the MIC CENTRANCE preamp seems to have resolved the issue but as it is intermittent my faith in the PC is zero Using the mic and preamp to another pc is perfect
I do not know why FX and stereo are now default opening settings
I do not know if this is a latency issue
It is intermittent so will have to use for shows and risk a re record until I find the issue Hence thanks for any advice
