MOTU V3HD
Hi all,
I’m looking into upgrading an older Blackmagic Multibridge system to a better system. They client needs to do HD for Finishing and I’m drawn between the V3HD and the Aja 3x card.
I’ve used a borrowed V3HD a few times and I only had one issue but it was a major issue where we must have had a power hit and the thing just died. The next day it all of a sudden came back and we haven any other issues since.
Has anyone had any other issues with this box? If I went that way would I be kicking myself later?
What are your thoughts on this product so far? Should I just go with the AJA?

I’m a big AJA fan and I’m still a little skeptical of MOTU getting into video. Not that they don’t have great audio products, but this is the first product and they’re competing against AJA and BlackMagic Design.
One limitation that I’ve scene from the V3HD is that it’s limited to digitizing in DVCPROHD. For some shows, it’s fine to finish in DVCPROHD. I’d rather have the options of digitizing to uncompressed with the Kona 3. I also think the that Kona 3 offers other valuable features like upconverting SD to HD and crossconverting 720P and 1080i.
Plus the Kona 3 is made by AJA, a great company know for top notch support.

First off, you’re comparing two completely different things. The Motu is an external box and the Kona 3 is an internal card. If you want an external box, then you should be comparing it to the AJA Io HD.
Second, Motu is an audio company and after looking at their specs and the image of their system, I would stay with AJA. AJA is a broadcast video company and have pretty much been that way since their start. Avid, Autodesk, Media 100, Apple and many other NLE companies use AJA products.
AJA Kona 3 can up / down / cross convert material.
AJA Io HD can up / down / cross convert material.
Big difference is that the Kona 3 can support all the way to 2k production workflows. Io HD is limited to Compressed HD formats, though it can output uncompressed HD.
We run three Kona workstations and also have the Io LA and the Io HD
