I just installed a demo of Media Composer 5.5.1, hoping to purchase it in the near future. Wanted to try it out on my system first to make sure there weren’t any glaring issues, and the only big one I found was some sort of strange problem with my MOTU 828mk3 interface.

When playing audio out of the 828 in the OS, it works great.
When playing audio out of MC5 via built in speaker or digital out, it works great.
When launching MC5 with the 828 selected, I usually get a bus error.
If I launch MC5 as built-in, and then change to the 828 and try to play out, I get massive distortion/feedback in output.

    Is the interface unsupported?

Is it unsupported?…. um, yes. It’s an audio only interface.

Perhaps read the system requirements before subjecting yourself to easily avoidable technical problems?

Starting to look like it’s a more deep seeded problem than the interface…
Now it seems that even having the interface selected on startup and switching to internal speakers before launching MC5 doesn’t even work half the time. Either:

    – Initializing audio hangs with SPOD
    – Bus Error
    – Failed to Initialize Audio Hardware -> Segmentation fault

Only way to reliably get audio working is to set the output to internal or digital out, and reboot the entire machine. Kinda surprised, since I’m playing video just to the attached displays for now and no video out, I would’ve hope there was at least some basic support for audio out, as the interface works on most OS X apps, FCP and even Avid ProTools 9. I’d be happy to run it on my PT HD machine, but I don’t have any slots available for a video out PCIe if I did do that.

Alex, did you not read my answer to your first question?

The MOTU 828 is NOT supported by AVID for ANYTHING related to Media Composer.

Got a better answer on the AVID boards, as it looks like it’s more an issue with driver conflicts than not being supported. After trial and error, it looks like the problem is coming from the firewire bus drivers even with the device not selected.
