Motion Typography
Posted by Mark Edward on July 30, 2008 at 4:32 pmHi there,
I have worked fairly exclusively with Photoshop for 7 years, nothing else, I know..shame on me.
I cannot for the life of me find any tutorials or starter advice with regards to Motion Typography in After Effects. There are plenty of examples on YouTube etc… I’m sure it’s a fairly simple process once mastered? easy for me to say at the moment…:0)
If anyone can give me any advice or links to any tutorial(s) I would be eternally grateful!
Many thanks

July 30, 2008 at 8:26 pmHi,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I wouldn’t post without a thorough search, I’m honeslty not that lazy. It is the lack of results which prompted me to post in the first place.
I’ve noticed that this motion art appears to be referred to in a number of ways, which is part of my search problem.
Motion text, Kinetic Type, Textacy, Flyby Text, etc..etc.. You would expect this to assist in search results, not so. It is very, very frustrating as the technique is so widespread.
I have found tutorials that ‘touch’ on the subject, but nothing of real substance that I can get my teeth in to.
I can assure you I have spent a lot of hours (and some cash on reputable tutorial DVD’s) that still haven’t been that clear, it’s driving me nuts now.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.
Many thanks

July 30, 2008 at 8:34 pmyou really just need to get into AE and look at your options.
The ‘text on a path’ plug in is very useful and has a lot of animation options. The text tool itself combined with the expression presets are excellent 1 step text animation options. The AE manual should explain
how to mess with these two options. The text on path plug in, you can just play with without instructions.Try those….

July 31, 2008 at 2:38 pmI was in the exact same boat.
I’ve been a product photographer for about 10 years. One day my boss says, “Can you make a video?” I was like, “Well, I don’t see why not.” I didn’t know an After Effects comp from an animated .gif from a hole the ground.
I’ve been really into three free resources for figuring out stuff:
Digital Juice (digitaljuice.com), they have a ton of videos talking about all kinds of stuff. Not all motions graphics though.
Video Copilot (videocopilot.net), this guy, Andrew Kramer has all these free tutorials. Some of them are pretty advanced or you have to have other plugins and stuff but they’re all screen captures so you can learn your way around the interface. Plus you can download the whole project usually so you can take it apart to see how it works. Start at the beginning and watch all that you have time for. Totally worth it.
And then here on the Cow there’s a an After Effects podcast. At the top of the website there’s a podcast button and it’s the first one there. There’s like 60 episodes and some of them are really basic, and they’re all pretty awesome and applicable.
It will take forever to watch everything all the way through so for a while I just did one or two a day and tried to follow through until I had the hang of things. Now I just pop on to see what’s new when I’m waiting for a render or something.
Good luck -

July 31, 2008 at 6:27 pmyour welcome mark. There are “handmade” ways to get the look you want, and if you’ve got time on your hands or no budget, id look into them.
Call me lazy, but IF a plug in “nails it” I buy the plug. Its a tax write off and a good investment in your career. Not all plug ins (obviously) do a good job at what they are intending to do, so read reviews and download trial versions when you can. I consider ‘Damage’
a must have tool because of its depth, quality and speed. But, to each, his own. 🙂

August 1, 2008 at 10:38 amHi Corbin,
Thanks for the reply. My situation is very similar to yours, so your advice is very welcome.
I’ve checked all the links you provided (I’d already been using videocopilot) and like you say, there are huge resources out there.
Thanks again.
Cheers

August 1, 2008 at 11:00 amHi Scott,
Thanks for taking the time to reply, it really is appreciated.
I decided to go freelance earlier this year and I’ve quickly realised after years of exclusive photoshop use, that I WANT and must move in to Motion Graphics & 3D if I want to move forward here and ‘out there’. I’ve seen what’s capable through Demo reels and I can’t begin to tell you how energized and to be honest…excited I am by what is possible.
I live on a very small Island in the middle of the Irish Sea. The opportunities here for letting your creativity flow professionally are virtually zero. I want to get this software nailed so I can project on screen what’s inside my head, like we all do. I’m also an electronic musician so an ideal place for me to be would be combining both somehow in the future….how? no idea! I’ll have to move to L.A! :O)
I just read this article with interest…
