    Hi,
I am putting multiple Motion clips on the FCP timeline and am attempting to place a cross fade between them (on the same video line) and it just won’t work.
I can cross fade them by alternating video lines, but this is a lot more labor intensive. Am I missing something?
    Thanks for the help.

After adding the transitions, go back into the motion tab and move the first and/or last keyframe past the end of the transitions.

He wasn’t very specific, but I can only guess he’s talking about clips rendered from Motion, the application. What is a “motion” clip anyway? A clip with motion tab fx? A clip with speed effects like slow motion? A motion project within FCP? A clip rendered from Motion?

Anyway, my guess is that it’s a Motion project clip and that he’s not shortening either clip so there’s no extra footage to add the transition to. FCP can’t create that magical footage out of thin air. Yet.

[Bret Williams] “my guess is that it’s a Motion project clip and that he’s not shortening either clip so there’s no extra footage to add the transition to.”

I think you may have a “handle” on the situation… even if the poster does not have any “handles” on the clips.

Yes I was talking about text clips created in Apple Motion and used in FCP. Even when there is sufficient room left on either side of the Motion clips for handles, I don’t seem to be able to drop a cross fade between them when they are side-by-side on the same video line.
    Thanks for your input.

Motion projects in the timeline are treated like nested sequences as if they are complete pieces of media. You have to ripple back 15 frames of the start or end of the project to create handles for one second transition. Have you done that?

    All the best,

Somtimes you really feel like kicking yourself.
This is one of those times. Handles! Handles! Handles!.
I’ll have “handles” branded on my forehead.
    Sometimes it’s the simple things…
    Thanks for your help.
