I have some video of me on a green screen where my fingers are typing in the air out in front of me as if they were typing on a keyboard, but there is no keyboard there. There is a close up of my hands where I wanted to have a motion trail of my fingers moving as I’m typing, but I don’t want the whole image to be blury..

… possibly with an unaffected copy of the hand footage sitting above the echo-affected hand footage layer.

Trails of what? Of your fingers or something else like a glowing “tail”? If it’s tail, I would motion track your finger tips, apply that data to the emitter of a particle generator. Then adjust the particles tight so they all look like one stoke that decays off.

Or use the same motion tracked data on a mask and use vegas….
it would be a little more ‘ trapcode glowy strokey… ‘

I’ve grown to like the vegas effect more than I should. I guess its just one of those effects that I didn’t know existed when I first started using ae…to be honest I don’t know if it was even in the software yet!

Hmm now that you mention a glowing tail, I originally was just going to have my fingers sort of blur together, but I think I like the tail idea, would trapcode 3d stroke work for that or would I need to use particular? Can you give me a more detailed explanation on how to motion track my fingers etc?? Thanks 🙂

Don’t have to use Particular. Just CC Particle World built into AE. Maybe set it to soft points then tweak the dynamics till the motion and falloff is right. Maybe drop a glow effect on it as well.

I did a little test sample and tried to motion track my fingers, it didn’t work out very well, the locator seemed to always be off

Ideally if you knew your goal before shooting you would put little tracking dots on your fingertips for the tracker to grab onto. You may have to just do it frame by frame. Hopefully your shot isn’t too long.
