Motion Tracking Failure
I have AE 5.5 Pro, so I realize I lack the latest and greatest in motion tracking. I’d like your insights as to why I was unable to complete a motion tracking job successfully.
Footage of race cars was provided on DVD, so it was pretty coarse. I was to cover up the logo on the hood of one of the cars, and put a different logo there.
I thought it would be easy; cars roll on wheels, the motion is fairly linear. But I found that (1) the cars actually jump around quite a bit, as did the camerawork; (2) the cars were not always very large in the frame, so when I zoomed in, the video was quite pixelated and it was tough to find a detail to track. As a result the motion tracking in AE 5.5 didn’t hold for long, and even when it did, the resulting adjustments still looked jumpy; the logo seemed to be moving constantly in relation to the hood onto which it was supposedly solidly “painted.”
When I gave up on motion tracking and tried to match manually the corners of the hood with the Corner Pins effect, the result was no better.
Post mortems, anybody? Multiple choice, or essay answers are welcome.
(a) Was the job itself inherently too tough for someone who only gets a motion tracking assignment rarely?
(b) Would I have had better results with a later edition of AE than 5.5?
