    Hello there,

I’m working with 360 footage for the first time, and for compositing reasons I need to use a motion tracker on moving figures within the footage. The camera itself is static. So far all the tutorials I’ve found relate to doing camera tracking, rather than tracking moving elements within the footage. I’ve tried tracking both in the raw equirectangular footage and within the automatically generated 3D composition, neither are working too well at the moment – does anyone have a recommendation of which method I should be pursuing?

    Thanks!

Hard to know, without knowing what you’re tracking, but generally, you will not use any kind of camera tracking for something like that–you’d be using the point tracker, or Mocha’s planar tracking abilities, depending on what you’re trying to accomplish.

hello , thanks for the reply!

To be more specific – yes, I need to use the point tracker so I can attach assets to moving parts of the footage. I’m just not sure if it’s better to pursue getting a good track in the equirectangular or VR camera mode – right now I’m not able to get a result with either – the point tracker doesn’t stick to any parts of the footage.

Not having done any VR work, I can’t comment on that, but I can tell you that it’s important, if you don’t already know how it works, to get some education on how the point tracker works–it’s a little different than you might expect.

Also, if you don’t have well-defined edges on your object, you’ll need to mess with contrast, saturation, SOMETHING, to make your tracked object stand out–you can also define what aspects of the image the point tracker looks for, like Luma, Chroma, or Saturation–so a red object that has the same Luma value as the background is hard to track in Luma mode, but easy in one of the other modes.

You might want to check out Mocha Pro 2019 which has an optimized workflow for mono & stereo 360/VR tracking:

One of the great benefits is that you can track moving objects as they go across the equirectangular seam for both tracking and masking. Also useful for object removal and stabilization.
