Motion Title Over Black Won’t Composite Properly
Posted by Rsk3527 on June 27, 2006 at 7:59 pmI have a Title over black that I can not get to composite correctly in FCP 5. I tried changing the Alpha Channel on the clip to black but this does not work. The closest thing that works is setting the composite mode to add but the graphic becomes very transparent. Will fcp just not composite unless you have a proper alpha channel. This graphic is from Beta, has motion in it and is the only form of the graphic I have.
Thanks,

That’s correct, there is no alpha channel present in anything from Beta.
Use the Key function and a do a luma key. then Remove the dark material.

June 27, 2006 at 8:22 pmI can never remember, but I think the composite mode you want is either screen or overlay. Try both & see which works better.

June 27, 2006 at 8:45 pmI tried the luma key and it worked pretty well after fooling around with the tolerance and the threshold, but there are still some jaggies.
On the beta the graphic came with a black and white matte. The graphic itself is yellow letters over a red background, then after it on the beta there is a black background with white matte cut out for the letters.
I originally had composited the matte over the letters to get the letters by themselve on black and then rendered out a quicktime of the motion graphics over black.
Is there a way to use the matte and the yellow letters over red background to composite over regular footage without all this rigging?
I hope this isn’t too confusing,

June 27, 2006 at 9:20 pmIf you have a travel matte on the tape with the graphic, place your background on V1, your matte on V2 and your “fill” video clip on V3. Then just change the alpha type (composite mode) on V3 to “travel Matte-alpha”. It should work.
Hmmm… or is it change the composite mode on V2…
Er, actually you might want double check this. I’m going from memory right now and after 50 the memory just ain’t what it used to be…
At any rate, check the manuals. It can be done and it works well.

Since you have the Matte, place the Matte below the Graphic layer. Then use Travel Matte – Luma.

Sorry, meant to say, use Travel Matte – Luma on the main Graphics layer. This will use the white in the matte down below to cut the key.
If you are doing this in a DV timeline, you will most likely still see some jaggies from the DV compression.

Once you get an alpha channel into your graphic with a luma key, or by using a trave matte, You could try putting a slight blur on your alpha channel to get rid of your jaggies.
Use a gaussian blur… just change the default Alpha and RGB setting to Alpha. You probably won’t want to do anything too drastic, but a little can do a lot of good.Zak
