Motion Template Project too Heavy
Hi,
I’m not a motion expert and so I recently purchased a motion 4 template on a stock agency to be used as intro for a project.
The first part of the template is a video wall with about 50 drop zones. Unfortunately I have problems to get it running. It seems that Motion or my computer can’t handle 50 HD clips at once. It’s very slow to work with the template and once everything is assembled, Motion only exports the first few seconds of it before it just stops…no error message. Sometimes it crashes however.I tried it on my MBP 2,8 i7, 4GB Ram and also on a MacMini DualCore 2,7 i7.
I thought the size of the HD clips are just too large and I downsized them to SD H264 But still no improvement.
The template is 24fps and all my footage is in ProRes422, 1920×1080, 25fps, could this be the problem?
Can anyone help me to isolate the problem. Is it the Clip Size? Just too many clips? My computer specs? corrupted files? too slow capture disk? Codecs?

It’s all of those things. A huge number of HD clips, not enough RAM, not a powerful enough graphics card – it’s just too much for Motion to handle. You’d need a MacPro with a beefy graphics card and at least 8GB of RAM for something like that – 50 HD clips, really?? At the same time? If there is only one or two on the screen at the time, it should work – you might try re-rendering them as PRLT, that should help. Not sure what else to suggest without seeing the project.

Is there a workaround? Most of the clips are only seen as thumb-nail sized, thats why I thought it could work by downsizing all the clips except the one.
In the meantime I also read that H264 clips should be avoided in Motion. Is that true, and if it is what codec should I use to downsize the clips?Eric Madeja – Treasure Images Productions – Marine Environment Specialist

Yes resizing them as small as possible will help a lot. I’d use Pro Res LT.

Looking at the effect, if the flashes are adjustable, 1 more flash in that group would make it illegal in the UK due to PSEs (Photo Sensitive Epilepsy) no more than three flashes per second

Thanks Roger, learnt something new, but it still doesn’t solve my problem. Some clients just like that funky flashy stuff. I give it another day with trying some workarounds before abandoning this template.
