Motion path in 3D space (making the starts circling a person’s head effect)
I want to get a similar effect as when a cartoon character gets dizzy there are stars that float around his head, but text instead of stars. I made a circle as a mask for my text and when I rotate the mask in 3D space, the text does also. Is there a way to rotate the mask in 3D space and still attach the text to it?

There is a better way.
1. Make a Null object and Make 3D.
2. Move the anchor point in Y-axis say 200 px.
3. Move the Anchor point at the center of the comp.
4. Make a Star Shape using Shape Layers.
5. Now Make a Text layer and place it above the star.
6. Precomp both Text and Shape layer and make it a 3D layer.
7. Place the Precomp above the Null object. Parent the Precomp to the Null.6. Now you can animate the rotation to create the desired look.

If you wanted the individual letters to align to a circular mask there’s an animation preset for that titled “3D Rotate around Circle.” You can search for this in the Effects & Presets panel and apply it to a text layer. I had a “whoa, cool” moment the day I dissected that one 🙂
