  • Motion Path from illustrator to After Effects Camera???

    Hi All,

My first post, i’ve been hovering this site for a while i’ve learnt alot. There’s probably an easy way to do what i want, but i can’t figure it out at all. I followed Andrew Kramer and Jon Okerstrom’s Tutorials on Reflection’s, i got the efffect i want, but when i try and animate the camera on a motion path it all goes downhill from there. i make a simple path in illustrator and then import it in the position of the camera, for some reason the camera goes wild, i’m not sure where to go from here, any advice or help i could get would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to study this tutorial

It goes over how the path goes to the cameras XY plane.. You’ll probably need a Null to help control your camera more percisely.. Then again.. You could just animate your camera, depending how complex it is?

It may be because your camera target is in the same position so as the camera moves around it is always looking at the same point.

The path i’ve created is a long and smooth S, i’ve looked at that tutorial a couple of times and i can’t seem to get it right…

Tried those settings too, and the Orient along path. I can’t seem to make the path sit on the groung plane (Floor layer)… i can’t think what i’m doing wrong…

Create a Null layer, Parent the camera to the null, and then repaste the path into the position of the Null. Iam not quite sure what your path looks like… So i am guessing here..

I’ve done that too, the null just goes crazy, and the camera follows, it still doesn’t make the camera do the fly through effect i want it to…

I don’t really know what you mean by “the camera goes crazy,” but maybe try using the path from illustrator to alter the Point of Interest as well as the position.

Perhaps start with a clean slate. Maybe you have some crazy 3d placement X/Y/Z going on. Create a New Comp and build a quick environment with a floor and some sort of floating 3d text or solid. Then create the Camera and Null, and get the camera parented to the ‘3d’ Null. Then paste your path into the Null’s position. Feel free to change your “Camera View” so you can see how your path has been placed.. Again, Im not sure what your path looks like, .. sometimes retracing your steps you’ll find something silly.

Is there any chance i could send you my project file to see if there is anything wrong with it, i’ve only been using after effects for a couple of months so i’m starting to get myself into a hole.
