Motion Integraton – Replacing footage
Posted by Les Kaye on November 8, 2005 at 5:03 amHow does one change out the footage in FCP on clips sent to Motion? I couldn’t find it in the manuals and it certainly doesn’t seem intuitive. I did try replacing it in the subclip created when the clips were sent to Motion, but that didn’t work either.
Thanks,

November 8, 2005 at 2:05 pmChange the clips in Motion… i.e. open the motion project, make changes, then it should be updated in FCP to reflect those changes.

Thanks Jerry…but how do I EASILY replace the FCP footage in Motion? I work in multiclip with 6-10 cameras, with each take generally at least an hour. In this instance I need 20 frames of the take. The suggestion on the Motion forum was to render (export?) from FCP and replace the footage in Motion. Are we discussing the same solutions?

November 8, 2005 at 11:08 pmI’m a bit confused possibly, but If all you need is another 20 frames of something already in the motion project, why not just add the frames in Motion in the timeline window there? you can drag a clip longer there with ease anyway… or just import those 20 frames if they are not already part of another clip… as was suggested in the Motion forum.

November 9, 2005 at 2:43 amThanks Jerry. No, it’s not a matter of simply trimming x number of frames, but actually replacing one of the FCP clips with a completely different one – apparently not an easy task from what I gather. On the one hand it’s a little surprising since the Motion team is basically the former Combustion team, where the integration with edit was/is almost sublime (In edit, the Combustion clip is placed ABOVE the edit footage sent over. Meaning that the actual Combustion clip can be copied and placed elsewhere on a timeline (or timelines), and thus could be re-rendered using the different footage below the duplicated/moved Combustion clip.
I do have a sneaking suspicion that given the team’s heritage, this would be something that will show up eventually – if only because it’s too clunky now…

November 9, 2005 at 9:18 amIt’s interesting what you’re saying about the Combustion/*edit integration. Do you mean that the clip sources for the combustion project are “live” in the *edit timeline, so they can be changed at any time and the Combustion clip will automatically update?
In FCP I’d really like to be able to “peek inside” the Motion clip and get a sub-timeline where you could replace the footage if you wanted to.

Yep. Just re-render.

Which is why I’m surprised it doesn’t do this now, since a nested clip is created in the bin. I tried changing this nested clip, but it didn’t work either.
Thanks.
