I’m just finishing off a 1080i HDV project (horrible, smelly codec), and I’ve created a whole bunch of motion graphics in After Effects. Before rendering them out, I was wondering if it would be better for them to be rendered out in, say, 10 bit uncompressed rather than Prores. The sequence is a 1080i HDV sequence with rendering set to Prores. My real question here is that if I render out the AE motion graphics to 10 bit uncompressed, then place them in my HDV sequence, won’t FCP then be forced to render those bits in Prores, thus defeating the purpose of my 10 bit uncompressed AE renders?

    Did that make ANY sense?

On a very slightly related note, I’ve noticed that when ’round tripping’ clips from FCP to AE back to FCP, it appears as though AE changes the gamma of the clips. Has this happened to anyone else?

    Cheers.

Whether you export in 10b Unc or ProRess you won’t see any difference.
You intend export your master in HDV?

This is just like that when you go from YUV to RGB or back.

Thanks for the reply, Rafael. I’ll be playing my master out to HD Cam (which was why I was wondering about the whole Prores vs. 10 bit thing).

Then don’t forget set “Render all YUV material in High Precision”.
