motion graphic specs for HDV
I’m working on a project that has source footage that’s hdv 1080i and has a frame size of 1440×1080. Now, I know that although the HD footage has a frame size of 1440×1080, it actually displays at 1920×1080 (16:9) in FCP. That makes sense to me, but I have a graphics guy creating a motion graphic intro and I wonder if the graphic is sized for 1440×1080, if i will cause a stretched look to the graphic?

I’d have them design @ 1920×1080 and then squeeze down upon render to 1440×1080. That way the aspect ratio will be correct all the way around.
What codec are they rendering to?

The photoshop presets work great.

I believe the codec is hdv. So, I already told the graphics guy to go ahead with the 1440×1080. Do you think that will be a problem, or are you just saying the graphic would work at 1920×1080? I just want the best looking on export.

As long as his graphics program understands that it really designing a partially anamorphic 1920×1080 image, you are good. If the graphics program cannot handle the aspect ratio, you will have some problems when bring it back in to FCP. That’s why it’s best to design at what the final output resolution is going to be (in this case 1920×1080), then scale down the render when needed.
