Motion effects jitters
When creating slow motion (15fps) via the interpolated field method on footage shot with a 16:9 mask on my AG-DVX 100A, the horizontal edges of the top and bottom black bars on a 4:3 monitor show unacceptable jitter. (It’s even worse with the VTR-Style method.) Since the interpolated field approach produces the smoothest motion, to use it and beat the jitter problem, I created a 16:9 mask in Photoshop with the bars a couple of pixels thicker than the AG-DVX mask. As a matte key on video track 2 it hides the jittering mask on V1 and the shift in mask size on the slo-mo shots is not apparent. Has anyone else had this problem and how have you dealt with it? Am I liable to have some kind of problem with the AG-DVX mask vs the keyed .psd mask when the show goes home via broadcast or DVD to different screen shapes? Or is there a software solution I

Because it is such a straight line, the edge is represented by a single line which is going to show up and go away based on which field you are on. When creating the motion effects, depending on the style, it will move that line around because of the fields issue. What you are doing is the best trick, create a mask that is a pixel or two greater than the interpolated motion effect.
Have you tried the FluidMotion preset for 50%?

Thanks for the reply, Michael. Since the Photoshop 16:9 mask key on V2 (or the top video track) essentially replaces the mask created in the camera, why not shoot 4:3 leaving head room for 16:9 and have the option to determine the format later? And there would be no built-in mask to jitter. The only drawback is the difficulty of precise framing which may or may not be critical depending on the nature of the shoot. Anyway, I will try FluidMotion. Jim

I like shooting 4:3 rather than letterbox so I can repsosition my shots later is post. There seems to be another good reason to do so with motion effects.
