  • Motion blur when rendering video and I cannot figure it out. (Sony Vegas 9)

Posted by Ryan Thomas on May 1, 2014 at 2:14 am

Before posting this message, I browsed and searched google all over the place, but no matter what I do I cannot find the answer so I appreciate all of your help.

Here is the problem (Sony Vegas 9):

My video is taken from my Sony camera and is a .mts file in AVC format.

More properties of the video file:

    General
    Name: 00111.MTS
    Type: MPEG-2 Transport Stream
    Size: 27.36 MB (28,016,640 bytes)

    Plug-In
    Name: compoundplug.dll
    Folder: C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 9.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\compoundplug
    Format: MPEG-2 Transport Stream
    Version: Version 1.0 (Build 226) 64-bit
    Company: Sony Creative Software Inc

If I view my video as “Preview – Half” it looks great. But when I preview my video in “Good – Full” mode or “Best – Full” or “Preview – Full” it has this blurry motion blur applied to it. You can see an example here:

And no matter how I render it as a WMV file, it ALWAYS ends up blurry. Here are my render settings:

    Windows Media Video V11
    Mode: CBR
    Format: Windows Media Video 9
    Image Size: (Keep Original Size)
    Pixel Aspect: 1.000 Square
    Frame Rate 29.970 NTSC
    Second Per Keyframe: 5
Override Default compression buffer (seconds): 5
    Video smoothness: 75

    Bit Rate: 15 M
Video Rendering Quality: Good (I’ve also tried Preview and Best)

Any ideas on why this is doing this? I also tried disabling resample as well by right clicking on the clips and choosing “switches —> disable resample”

    Thanks for your help!

Go to View and double check to make sure that the Video Bus Track
is not selected, and no Motion Blur Amount is on it.

I checked this just now and I do not see any indication of motion blue in that video bus track so unfortunately I do not think that is the problem. 🙁

And when you play it back on WMPLAYER?

Yes, it is the same result in windows media play: blurry motion blur. 🙁

I still can’t figure this one out. It seems like I’ve tried everything.

[Ryan Thomas] “Video Rendering Quality: Good (I’ve also tried Preview and Best)”

    O..K..

I don’t think you have motion blur. I think you have a DEINTERLACE issue going on. You are going from INTERLACE to PROGRESSIVE and somehow the render has to take into account for this.

Try and RIGHT click on the Event and use “Reduce Interlace Flicker” and render a small piece. What do you Get?

Also, what are your settings in Project Settings for BLEND Fields?

I don’t think this is Motion Blur, but rather somewhere within your workflow going from INTERLACE to the WMV you are needing Progressive.

    Interesting . . . .

Thanks for the help. I am using Sony Vegas Pro 9.

When I go to render the WMV file, I notice it says it has these render settings:

Audio: 96 Kbps, 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, WMA
    Video: 29.970 fps, 1920×1080 Progressive, 5 Mbps
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000

You’ll see it says PROGRESSIVE but I do not know how to change it. It seems like I am unable to for some reason with the WMV file extension.

Also, for deinterlace methos, I have “Blend fields” set by the way.

By the way, it’s build 895 v9.0c if that helps.

    Thanks again.

    Honestly?

    Either choose another template….

Or use YADIF, a freebie deinterlace s/w. I’ve had it Plugged into Vegas and have used it a coupe of times.

Sorry, if it’s the Interlace to Progressive ( none interlace) deinterlace issue then I don’t know what else to suggest.

Hey Graham, I believe I FINALLY figured out the setting that was causing the problem. Here was the fix for me (for now at least):

If you are having blur issues, go to:

File –> Properties –> Set Deinterlace Method to “Interpolate fields”

So far, it is working. Any ideas WHY this setting works though?

    Thanks again for your help!
