  • Motion blur when on final DVD…

Posted by Owen Myers on July 13, 2009 at 8:25 am

Last week, I posted a question about how to reduce motion blur through the rendering process. I was using Main Concept Mp4 as instructed prior. The answer last week, was to switch to Main Concept Mpeg-2. It worked, MOSTLY.

Here are my questions to really tweak things.
    1. What are I-frames and what is the appropriate setting if the whole project has been created 1440x1080x128,24p. Is the default 15 correct?
    2. What are B-frames and is the default setting of 2 correct?
    3. Profile. Is the default Main correct?
    4. Field Order… Upper, Lower or None (Progressive Scan) Which one?
    5. Video Quality. I usually crank it up to High.
    6. Insert Sequence Header before every GOP. Checked or Unchecked. What is a GOP.
    7. I’ve learned to use a Constant Bit Rate setting. I usually use 10 million. Is that enough?
    8. (Advanced) What are P-frames?
    9. (Advanced) Is the default DC coefficient of 9 Bit correct?

    I render audio separately.

My only other question is in DVD Architect Pro 5.0.

My project is in 24p. DVD Architect won’t let me change it from 29.97.

What’s the deal with that? Is it a DVD thing where it only wants to be in 29.97. When I Optimize Disc for burning, I can change the Video to 23.976 progressive. Is this helping me.

Thank you for any answers to any of these questions.

None of those parameters are going to affect your motion blur. Have you determine where the motion blur is coming from? Are you sure it’s not in the source video? I remember you were shooting XDCAM 24p. What are your Vegas project settings? Which project template did you use and did you change anything about it? Is Vegas recognizing your footage as 24p? What do the media properties say? Finally, what template are you rendering with? Did you use the DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen video stream template and then render your audio separately using Dolby Digital AC3 like I said. There should be nothing to tweak. Just use the default templates at the correct frame rate that Vegas provides and there should be no bluring of frames.

    Q. Have you determine where the motion blur is coming from?
    A. Motion Blur was reduced dramatically when switching to mpeg-2. So i believe at least some of it is in the rendering process.
    Q. Are you sure it’s not in the source video? I remember you were shooting XDCAM 24p.
    A. No. But we used a better than average camera for a reason. Operated by a professional camera operator with a full SteadiCam rig.
    Q. What are your Vegas project settings?
    A. 1440x1080x128, 24p
    Q. Which project template did you use and did you change anything about it?
    A. Not sure, where I would find project templates. So my answer is I don’t know and probably not.
    Q. Is Vegas recognizing your footage as 24p?
    A. How would I check that? All I do is set the project properties to 24p. Maybe it’s wrong of me to assume that’s all there is to it.
    Q. What do the media properties say?
    A. 1440x1080x128, 24p.
    Q. Finally, what template are you rendering with?
    A. Main Concept, mpeg-2. 1440×1080, 16:9, 10 million fixed bit rate. Left everything else alone.
    Q. Did you use the DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen video stream template and then render your audio separately using Dolby Digital AC3 like I said.
    A. I always render audio seperately with the AC3 Pro. So I’ve got that. The DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen is something I don’t know how or where to find it. In DVD Architect no matter what I do, I can’t seem to change the setting from 29.97. Except for when I optimize disc, I can change it to 23.9… (progressive) Maybe this is the missing step.

If it’s just the last answer that you can help with, I would be beyond appreciative.

Thank you for your time so far.

As a first step, you must determine if the blur is in your source. I don’t care how good your camera operators are, 24p has limitations in the amount of motion that it can record. Anything more than that is a blur. Set your project (Alt+Enter) to HDV 1080-24p (1440×1080, 23.976 fps). Don’t play with any other settings. Right-click on one of the XDCAM events and select Properties. Go to the Media tab and look at the Frame rate. Does it say 23.976 fps? (it should). Now that you have confirmed that you have a 24p project with 24p media, look at the playback and see if there is any motion blur. If the media doesn’t play back at full frame rates then make a timeline loop selection and use Shift+B to perform a RAM preview so you can see it full frames. Is there any motion blur? Look at individual frames too.

If the source does not have any blur then it does seem like the render is causing this. The only thing that would make Vegas blur anything is if the frame rate is being changed and it is blending frames. If you render with the DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen video stream template then your render has pulldown added to bring it back up to 29.970 fps. Perhaps this is where the blur is happening? Edit the template and change the frame rate from “23.976 + 2-3 pulldown” to just “23.976”. This will render the file without pulldown. When you drop this file into DVD Architect, do not “optimize” the disc. You don’t want DVD Architect to touch the footage. DVD Architect should then print this file to disc without changing it and your original 24p footage will be preserved.
