  • Motion 5 stalls system when opening project

    Hi,

I am new to Motion and bought it a couple of days ago. I have created a couple of test projects, which went pretty well. Then, the next day, I wanted to continue on these projects, but…… Motion 5 does not complete opening them anymore ! Instead the whole system grinds to a halt and the only option left is a cold reboot. I cannot even force quit the app. I can still create a new project, though. Of course this app would be pretty useless if updating or even opening existing projects is not “a feature”. So at the moment I feel like just wasting €45,-

Does anybody have an idea what could be causing this ?

I am running an iMac 4GB with Snow Leopard latest version. The console log shows some Motion message about trying to do an autorelease with no pool assigned – just leaking. Maybe that can shed some light. At the least that is a programming error.

    Any advice is welcome.

I would trash the app and redownload from the app store. If that doesn’t work, try logging in as a different user to see if it’s related to the user account.

    Hi Mark,

Did all that and no luck. Got a tip to open the projects from within Motion’s own file browser and drag the project to the layers tab. Funny enough that does work (????!!!) so that is my work around for the time being. There seems to be a relation between the problem to open a project via the open command and the presence of an animated light in the projects: when I open a problem-project via Motion’s file browser and delete the light, I can then open it the usual way. Very strange

Instead of dragging to the Layers list, try double-clicking the Motion project in the File Browser.

That might work as well, but opening a project from Finder should work properly and not stall the complete system, agree ? So, this is definitely a bug.

Forums like this are very usefull and Apple should embrace them and react on them (or supply us with a decent bug reporting mechanism) my feeling is they don’t and I find that very frustrating

Apple certainly looks at what is going on in the forums, but to be sure, you can always send feedback directly:

P.S. I tried that, but that doesn’t work. I must drag it to the Layers tab. Additional problem of opening a project this way is that it will ask for a diffewrent name when saving it.

Yes it should work from the Finder. I’d try signing in as a different user account.
