Motion 2!!!
It’s strange how web forums are today, in every Motion forum we have every day ten similar questions about graphics cards, but zero comments the day Apple announces a full new version of Motion! Strange, isn’t it?
And it seems to be a really exciting new version of it.
As it usually is the case with great software design, the best new features are probably not the ones users wanted, but those that users wanted but didn’t even know they wanted 🙂 For instance, I have trouble putting into words what “Replicator” is, let alone asking for such a thing. It does look wonderful. The MIDI keyboard support is also a truly innovative concept, with the only drawback that few motion graphic designers have one at hand right now, right?
For someone who loves both AE and Motion like myself, the After Effects integration workflow is amazing. It really speaks volumes about Apple’s strategy, when so many people said in the past that Apple is agressive towards Adobe and other software developers. Apple killed the AE vs Motion thing with elegance. If that only helps to avoid the hundreds of AE vs Motion posts, that in itself will be great!
Obviously the information is not yet very deep, but seems like there’s some kind of basic 3D functionality in V2. Not truly 3D or 2.5D space, but probably a great step for many things. There’s 3D distorsion too. 16 and 32 Bit floating point processing, with HDR image support! And did you guys read that Compressor 2 does standards conversion with advanced optical flow technology? God.
I really hope Apple posts this week in-depth PDFs about the new applications.

Dude, you obviously don’t have Garage Band. I purchased Garage Band one day and the very next day went back to the Apple Store and picked up the M-Audio 49 key keyboard. You should hear me play Hendrix on that thing. 🙂 You can get a nice USB MIDI keyboard for $99 at the Apple Store. I can’t wait to try out that feature with Motion 2. Or should we start calling it M2 for short?

In a word, Brilliant! Can’t wait to integrate this with my animations in AE. I just purchased the Wondertouch Particle Emitters for Motion and they are just superb. Now I’ll be able to work them in even easier with this integration.
Sounds like good things are coming and only 4-5 weeks until everything ships. Sounds great!

Yes, Walter, I really enjoy GarageBand and the former self of SoundTrack (though I always thought that Soundtrack should have been what it has become today!). A MIDI keyboard was for me a 10th priority (after a new graphics card, after a new DVCPROHD or HDV cam, after more RAM, after…. buying the new production suite, the new Adobe CS thing, after… aaargh!). The MIDI keyboard is probably first after all those now 🙂
Walter, are you at NAB? Would it be unpolite if I ask you to find out a couple of things there?

Good gosh man! The Midi keyboard is totally important with Garage Band if you want to rock out very badly! 🙂
I was supposed to be there at NAB this year and had to cancel everything on Thursday due to a very hard deadline on Tuesday along with a ton of other work. Business has been absolutely insane over here this year and we’re doing a LOT more broadcast now in HD which is really fun and gratifying. Articles for the Cow are one of the things I was going to be doing so I probably would answer pretty much every question you have.
Sorry about that and maybe next year I finally get back there!

Thanks, Walter. I am particularly curious about the information that Apple made some changes in FCP’s motion tab functionality (for the first time since v.1.0, if you consider that time remapping is about “internal” motion rather than “external”). If you find out anything about that….

It’s what I’ve been looking forward to for weeks. Now we have to wait just a little bit longer.
I can’t wait to see how Motion performs on Tiger with my 4.5 gigs of RAM.
Did you see that Motion is 64 bit now? Is that the first?

Motion 2 will be able to take advantage of more than 4gb’s of RAM. Overall, it looks like a very nice update. I did here about one cool undocumented feature (and unsupported): If you set your FCP 5 sequence to Unlimited RT, it will attempt to play imported Motion and Livetype comps in RT without rendering (no guarantees, but cool anyway).

I saw this at the booth at NAB. You have to shut off the warn about dropped frames in the prefs I think.
