Go to a reseller. Plunk down your money for a pre-built system. The money you save by doing it yourself will evaporate in time and energy (and probably parts) in the long run.

Depends who you are and what you want to do. i get a kick out of building my own and wouild not go to a reseller.

My opinion is that this is one of those tough times to build. i know what works with Avid Xpress right now, but don’t know what PCI Express cards will work etc..

i know this is not much help. Build your own if you know what you are doing.

It is always wise to be behind the bleeding edge. that way Avid and others solve the problems before you have them!!

The powerhouse AMD solution at the moment is the Tyan Thunder K8WE. It is a workstation board based on the nForce4 chipset and supports dual Socket 940 Opterons, including the soon to be released dual cores. It has two PCI-e slots for SLI, supports up to 16GB of Reg ECC RAM, has an integrated SATA RAID controller and an optional U320 SCSI RAID Controller. Tyan also has absolutely the best support in the business. Unfortunately, all of this comes at a price. The non-SCSI version of the K8WE is currently available for around $480. Also note that it is eATX form factor. I recommend the Lian Li PC-V1200 to go with it. This case is a work of art.

In my experience the Avid software often is troubled by non-Intel chipsets; this is probably why no AMD system is currently qualified by Avid…
If you really want to build the system yourself (which I wouldn’t recommend for real production systems) observe the following:

    – Intel chipset
    – NVidia graphics card
    – Firewire controller w/ Texas Instruments chipset
    – at least 1,5Gig RAM

    Just my two cents
