    Hi there, fellow Varicam folks,

I’m upgrading my matte box, and considering buying a set of diffusion filters. In the past, I’ve used Tifen black Pro-mist, as well as Harrison & Harrison diffusion.

I’m curious what — if any — filters are preferred by Varicam users.

Now, I know a little bit of diffusion goes a long way on a 2/3″ sensor. And I think we’d agree the results are pretty subjective.

Having said all of that, I’d like to know: what’s your favorite diffuson filter for Varicam?

    thanks

    Thomas,

I find in general that half the usual filtration is what’s appropriate for HD, such that the 1/8th Promists act like a 1/4. I use ProMists, Soft FX’s and small amounts of Classic Softs, but usuallu only upon the insistance of the client or subject, preferring to shoot “straight”. Of course for “effects” the sky’s the limit. Be careful to judge the effect of your filtration on a large native resolution Hd monitor.

With the amazing things you can do in post with plug-ins, I don’t use my filters anymore. All effects are added later. That’s gives so much more creative latitude, plus, doesn’t lock you into permanently having soft footage when (and they always do) you’re clients want to re-use the shots for another project.

Saying that, I have a set of Tiffen Black ProMist that are very nice. I have a full set, but usually only used the 1/2 or 1.

I use the 900, but I only use polarizers and grads. The rest of the “look” is more of an art direction thing in post.
