most efficient way to preview? WITHOUT SLOW PLAYBACK

crazy n00b question even though Ive been using AE for 11 years
very simple
what is the best way to playback the currently rendered frames at full speed?
I’m on a machine with a fast gpu rtx 2070 , and even when I have the frames pre-rendered with the green line above them- the frames start playing back full speed then the audio dips into slo mo sludge and I’m back at a slow preview
what is the best workflow for previewing compositions at 100% playback speed?

Reduce the preview quality to below full.
