    I didn’t intend to move the goal posts, but only get the most economical raid 1 for sd and hd. The suggestions here have been very helpful and thoughtful and sincere, but I might have been a little too ideal as to a reasonable priced one size fits all solution. One thing that you did mention that raised an eyebrow is the need for fibre channel options to “be configured and populated with drives by a manufacture.” If an end user could do this the fibre option would be ideal. (Assuming a fibre option raid 1 is fast enough to support hd.)

    I think you’d be better off looking for RAID 10 or RAID 0+1 (sorry, but I don’t really understand the difference well enough to even start trying to explain). Either should give you a nice compromise of speed plus redundancy. But you do can’t create these arrays with Disk Utility, you need a hardware controller that supports it.
