I’m beginning a new project in which images or video elements will move through the frame left to right. As they pass through the frame, the image is seen at several different focal lengths (or magnifications) along with other treatments like color correction, blur, etc., in an organic mosaic pattern.

I can picture how to achieve the end result, but I’d like to ask for opinions on the best way to set up the screen for final render. Would it be just multiple precomps with different masks? Or is there a more clever way to approach this?

Multiple precomps will allow for more control over the areas where you will be applying your treatments. Otherwise, a single comp with a grayscale layer used for the different focal length (3d fog or compund blur) will be much faster to set up.
