I am considering the HVX200 camera, but I am a bit confused about what “gear” I will need to go with it. I use Final Cut 5.1 and a Sony DSR-11 deck connected to my mac via firewire 400 with a Panasonic 1420 color monitor that is connected to the Sony deck.

I thought I would go the Firestore route rather than the P2 cards so I could get more record time and import to FCP directly from the Firestore. I assumed that I could do color balancing using my existing Sony deck and Panasonic monitor while working in Final Cut.

From reading the other comments in this forum, it seems like this might not be possible. Is it possible or will I have to get a new monitor….Joseph

As long as you are shooting dv (and dv only) your setup will work. If you plan to shoot dv50 or dv100, it won’t work and you will need to make a sizable investment in new gear.

I guess that means a new calibrated HD monitor. Are the LCD professional monitors as good as the CRT calibrated monitors? Any thoughts about the Matrox MXO and down converting HD to SD and doing the color correction using the scopes and viewing on the SS monitor for getting the HD footage properly color balanced?….Joseph

I think the MXO plus a good calibrated SD-monitor is not such a bad idea for checking color and contrast. You can always check focus on the computer’s screen (Cinema Desktop Preview).

As long as we have to take care for some SD output as well, this will also show you any interlace issues (like flickering of thin lines) you might run into. No flat screen can display this!

Thanks for the information. I think the HVX 200 is a good choice compared to HDV cameras, but I would like to keep as much of my existing gear as possible. Also, I like to see flesh tones on a calibrated monitor and check clip to clip consistencey for color. I shoot a lot in strange environments with no light kit possible so the light may change as sun comes through a side window and/or the color of the walls may be different in different clips so I don’t fully trust the scopes without seeing the result.
