(More Qustions) Audio lag
Posted by Sprague Theobald on April 21, 2008 at 1:38 pmHi,
Bear with me here. When I’m capture vid from my playback deck (Advance Capture) into Vegas Pro 8.0, after about 3 or 4 minutes the video starts getting ahead of the audio. I’m guessing that this might have some thing to do with dropped frame rate (wild guess) but wouldn’t know where to go from there. If it helps, I shot the footage on my Canon XL2 in 24p 2:3. I’m also using external speakers. Any thoughts? As always, many thanks in advance.

After capture, when you pull the footage onto the timeline
is it still out of sync?Regards, Rick.

April 28, 2008 at 1:55 pmHi Rick,
Many thanks for getting back to me on this. I was beginning to think I’d posted something incorrectly. No, when I drag a clip that was out of sync in “advance capture” onto the time line, it’s in sync. Which is a 50% relief. Any thoughts? Also, (as long as I’ve got you) do you known if, when capturing, there’s any way to log and save multiple clips with the same name? Such as, if I name a clip “Pan R/L” and then a few clips later (out of sequence) want to use the same title, “Pan R/L”, is there a setting I can change so that it doesn’t want to update the existing Pan R/L but create a different clip w/ the same name?
Many thanks in advance.

That is good news. If you are capturing via a firewire
cable (as I’m sure you are) the video and audio are locked to
each other, hence after capture you pull it onto the timeline and audio and video are in sync. The reason for the drift while monitoring your capture is because your computer’s soundcard internal clock is not locked to Vegas capture.
In fact you may notice it drift on long projects played back on Vegas timeline. What model soundcard are you using and what is selected for an audio playback device in Vegas’ Audio Preferences.Tonight I will look further into this for you.

April 28, 2008 at 9:02 pmHi Rick. Again, many thanks for this. Yup, I’m connected via a firewire. As for the sound card, I’ve left the studio for the day but will be there first thing tomorrow morning (EST) and try to get this info to you. In case I can’t find the sound card model right off the bat, I should look in Device Manager (Windows XP)?

April 29, 2008 at 1:06 amSprague here is somthing to try.
This is from the Vegas help file.Interpolate position
When check box is selected, the application will attempt to compensate for inaccurate devices by interpolating the playback or recording position. If you notice that your playback cursor is offset from what you are hearing, enable this option for the playback device. Here’s how to get to it.
Option/Prefrences/Audio Device Tab
Select Advanced button
Put a check in the “Interpolate Position” Box
OK.I this helps all done.
If not you might also experiment with another setting
in your advanced audio box.Position bias
If the position of playback or record does not match what you hear after you enable Interpolate position, you can attempt to compensate using the Position bias slider.Moving this slider will offset the position forward or backward to compensate for the inaccuracies of the device.
Hope this helps. Let me know.

April 29, 2008 at 11:41 amThanks Rick. Having come from LE6 this is a new system for me. I emailed the company that built this one and they told me that the audio card was stock, it was on board the tower when they got it. I’m not at the studio yet but will try doing what you suggested in your last email.
Again, many thanks!

April 29, 2008 at 2:09 pmHi Rick,
I went in and made those adjustments but to no avail. I got into my Device Manager but can’t seem to tell which is my audio card. Can you tell me what I should be looking for? Also, as far as getting into the system and seeing where Vegas points to for an audio application, I’m a bit lost there as well. However, as I said in a post from this morning I do know that the audio card is “stock”.
Thanks again,

April 29, 2008 at 6:06 pmHi Rick,
Yup, got that far, was just having trouble with your question:
“… what is selected for an audio playback device in Vegas’ Audio Preferences”.
The only choice I can see in Preferences/Audio is “Preferred audio editor” and don’t think that’s what you meant. The guys who put the system together for me suggested a Saffire LE. Any thoughts? Is it basically an add-on that I’d do an audio out from the back of my tower to this or is it a bit more complicated?
Thanks,
