More questions about bumping up dv timeline to uncompressed
Thanks for responding to yesterday’s post. The last post by Graeme mentioned inserting 2 lines on top and 4 on bottom. How can that be achieved? If there are going to be”issues”, is bumping up to a 720 by 486 timeline a reliable and realistic way to get better titles out of a dv project?

If you play out a 720×480 video stream over your Decklink card over SDI, it will add in those lines for you. No need to worry about that.
As for helping with title quality:
1) if you titles look bad in the DV codec, they’ll look bad when tranmitted over NTSC, which does nastier things to titles than the DV codec ever did – you need to re-design those titles!
2) only if you’re mastering to a better format, say digibeta (taking into account 1 above)

My plan was this: I don’t have a Decklink or Kona card. I’m just bumping up my dv timeline to an uncompressed timeline. Add G NIcer to all my dv shot scenes. Output to DVCam. Take to facility and bump up in a linear room to Digibeta. Is this a wise approach. Won’t it enhance my subtitles?
Will it cause unwanted artifacts? Thanks Graeme for taking the time to give advice. -
If you’re outputting to DVCAM you’re wasting your time. That will undo any good work you do in FCP. You need to therefore address point 1) above.

My titles look fine in DV. What about G Nicer. That’s not a good idea either if I’m outputting to DV Cam in order to bump to Digibeta?

If you’re bumping up to digibeta, G Nicer works great, but you’ve got to do direct from the uncompressed timeline to Digibeta as that trip to DVCAM will undo the good work the plugin and uncompressed have done for you!

What if I apply the G NIcer then export to QT and then take to production house for Digibeta bump?

Exporting an uncompressed file for layback using an 8 or 10 bit card to digibeta would be best. I haven’t used G Nicer but bumping your Sequence up to Uncompressed will help all your uncompressed graphics & any FCP rendered material (Filters or Motion tab). But if you change the hight of your sequence from 480 to 486, understand that when you place DV footage in a 486 NTSC/D1 Sequence, the DV clip’s “Center” in the “Motion” menu of that clip should be 0,1.
When you insert a DV video clip into a sequence from the bin, FCP automatically does this for you. But it you take an edited DV sequence & change the Sequence Settings “Height” to 486 (to render it Uncompressed for output), the field order of your clips will not match the field order of your sequence causing interpolation (blur). The next step to fix that would be to apply a “Center” of 0,1 to all your DV footage. -

I don’t have a Kona card but I do have an AJA IO. Would the G Nicer and bumping up to Digibeta be effective through my AJA IO?
