More of RocketRaid 3522 problems
I wish I read that thread (https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/990161) before buying this RAID solution from PROAVIO (RR 3522 + EditBox 4MS). I got into almost the same problem that those guys had (no problems to write to the array RAID 5 but intermittent errors with reading or copying files that freezes FCP or Finder). After several months asking PROAVIO support by email with no answer, and buying and changing a new mini-SAS cable for $120 without success, I called them by phone and they said that my card (by the serial number) belongs to a batch that is defective and should be replaced. I’ve already sent the card to PROAVIO, but at this time I guess that even receiving another card is not a guarantee that the problem will cease. A friend of mine said that BH isn’t selling RR3522 anymore, it is discontinued there. So, what do you guys recommend? Is there any other options of controller cards to use with EditBox that really works? Should I wait and try the replacement card that they said they will send to me? Or should I forget this thing, consider that I lost my money, and buy another solution from CalDigit or other more reliable company?

Is your mac PCIe or PCI-X? For PCIe, you can use an Atto or Areca card. If it’s PCI-X, get an Areca. Stay away from High Point.

I just went through a bunch of trouble with a Pyro A/V card I had bought. Driver problems, kernal panics that crashed my macpro, basically not working. I sent it back and bought a CalDigit FASTA PCIe card and it works beautifully!
I guess they write their own mac drivers so everything is perfect. B&H is where I got it.

My Mac Pro is an “Early 2008 model” with PCIe slots. Thanks for the suggestion. Which card of these companies would you indicate to get a RAID 5 hardware implementation?

The Atto Express SAS, the Areca 1600 series and the CalDigit all offer RAID 5 protection. They all use an infiniband or SAS connector, not an eSATA connector- if your enclosure uses an eSATA connector, these cards are not compatable. Any of these 3 will be a good solution for you if your enclosure uses an infiniband or SAS connection.

I have a new Mac Pro 2009 and needed to interface with fast external storage. I have an Apple Raid Card internally which is currently supporting 4x1TB HDDs. I bought a 4 port HighPoint RocketRaid 2314 card and it has never worked correctly. I even upgraded the drivers and from what I can gather, I think there is a definite problem with the way HighPoint program their drivers. I am now sending my card back to the store and purchasing a 4 port eSata Stardom card which is apparently much faster, but will not allow me to set up a raid storage unit. This is fine as the external boxes I have now have their own Raid built in. The Rocket Raid is really flakey, the drives drop off for no reason and I have experienced lock ups in the finder and Final Cut Pro version 6.06 with Leopard 10.5.7. I have now uninstalled the drivers and the system seems stable again. I will rip out the card once the new one arrives. I think this card would work fine in a PC, but the drivers are flakey in a Mac and it seems others are having problems with 2000 series cards from HighPoint as well.
