More Like FPC7
I am making the switch over to PR CS5. Never bother much with it because I had FPC7. While I can continue to use FPC7 for awhile I figured just jump ship while I have the chance.
I have remapped my keyboard and am getting really cost to my current layout and work flow but there are a few things that are un clear to me. I would rather be cutting then trying to figure out what I am doing wrong.
First is setting up my sequence. FPC7 spoiled me by just setting it to the proper settings every time.
I shoot of an AG-AF100 at full 1080 24p. As far as I can gather I need to import the .MTS files to get the software to read it. Thats fine but there are times when it doesn’t split the audio and video into there separate tracks so I can edit them as I see fit.
Second I have remapped the keyboard to hot key from timeline to project, to source… etc. That works great but when I get into the project window and hit the up and down arrows to locate the clip I want and hit enter it opens up the re name function rather than sending the selected clip to the source monitor.
Third is there a way to target audio and video tracks like Avid. I find it is much faster if I never have to touch the mouse. If I could set the tracks I want to target my audio and video to like Avid it would be a huge help.
Thats it for now. Thanks for reading. Hopefully someone out there can get me back up and creating rather than banging my head over this whole FPCX issue.

To create a sequence, based on the properties of a clip, drag it to the NEW ITEM icon at the bottom of the project window, or right-click the clip (the latter only works in CS 5.5).
To target tracks, just click the tracks on the left column (where it says Video 1, Audio 1, etc). When they are highlighted, they are targeted. If you target multiple video tracks, and paste a single clip, it will always target the lowest track. BTW, you can rename the tracks if you don’t like “Video 1.”
I’m not sure what you mean by splitting the audio and video? In the timeline or source monitor?
There is no default keyboard shortcut for “Send to Source Monitor,” but you can easily add one. Go to the Edit Menu, select Keyboard Customization. Click the drop-down menu that says Application, and change it to Panels. Open up the Project panel, and scroll down, until you see “Open in Source Monitor,” and assign any keyboard command you want.
BTW, you should be able to view and edit MTS files from the Media Browser, so importing first is not a necessity.

Thanks for the source monitor tip that just got me back up and running. What I was referring to on the .MTS files is that PR was not displaying it as a video track and a audio track. It looked at it as one track.
The other thing is right and left audio in FCP7 was displayed as two separate tracks. Apparently PR doesn’t look at it in the same way. I guess it will just take some getting used to.

I think what’s happening is that the audio is showing up in a stereo track, specifically Track 5 (tracks 1-4 default to Mono). Scroll down in the audio timeline, and I’ll bet it’s there.
FCP usually shows stereo as L + R, and Premiere combines it into a stereo track (tracks are mono, stereo, or part of a 5.1 chain, and you can’t put a mono clip in a stereo track, etc.).
You can change a clip’s audio properties to L + R (which is handy if you have nat sound on one channel, and a lav mic on another, for instance). Before dropping a clip into a timeline, select it (or multiple clips), go to the Clip Menu, select Modify->Audio Channels. In here click the Mono radio button, and hit OK.
Now when you drag the clip into the timeline, it’ll look just like an FCP video + L + R track. -
ok I got it to show up on track 5 but couldn’t get it to split apart. It also won’t let me drag it up under the timeline…. but at least it is there.

You can’t drag it up, because a stereo track can’t be moved into a mono track. Look at the left column of the audio tracks, and you’ll a single speaker for mono, and two speakers for stereo. If you aren’t using the 4 mono tracks, just delete them (right-click the left column, select properties, and delete unused audio tracks). This will shift Track 5 up to Track 1.
However, to do the “split,” you have to follow the instructions I posted before. However, you have to do this before placing the audio in the timeline. Once it’s in the timeline, it can’t be changed.

The concept here is this:
Stereo clips can only go on stereo tracks.
Mono clips can only go on mono tracks.The default presets only start with STEREO Tracks – which is why you should modify the default timeline.
Once on the timeline, you can’t modify the original clips audio – because it’s on an audio track that would no longer match if you were to modify it.
Luckily, if you use a clip, it shows you what sequences it’s being used in.
Another dirty trick/tip I learned is to duplicate the clip…and modify the duplicate. THAT it will let you do.
