Here is some more info: ( I am always looking for suggestions to streamline… so feel free!)
My understanding is that the composite out of the HVX is HD not SD. We turn it into HD-SDI for the hi end monitors that have no analog inputs. Then we have to go to NTSC for the reference monitors for script and playback. Normally we hire a playback person and rent his $20K rig, but this particular job is a passion project and they have no money (wooing a potential up and commer). Thats why I wanted to see if I could rig up some sort of playback using FCP.
And I did! Borrowed a Canopus ADV box from a buddy and its all working great now! Use capture now, then can playback clips on demand. And didnt have to buy any equipment. Obviously wouldnt use FCP as the only capture, but for playback reference, its good enough!
