Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy More info…

  • Posted by Chris Babbitt on March 9, 2009 at 6:35 pm

According to Sevenmac, a new version of Final Cut Studio currently exists as an internal beta. The beta version, however, is reported to be buggy, which could force Apple to delay the special event by several weeks. No additional information on other possible software updates for the event are given. It would be unusual for Apple to hold a standalone media event for software updates alone, though further announcements or demonstrations of Apple’s upcoming Snow Leopard could conceivably warrant an event.

Quicktime X is apparently in the latest Snow Leopard build and that may be significant to Final Cut.

I don’t think March 24th would be a shipping product. It’ll likely be an announce and the start of the pre-order process.

See other thread. Why start a new one? It makes it harder for us to following. Especially since you’re tracking the same rumor site I am.

Sorry Craig. It was an accident.

Here I was thinking you were working with Apple on a new “anti rumor” strategy.

Rather then squelch rumors (kinda like trying to get rid of cockroaches by stepping on them) the strategy is to create so many spurious threads that it’s impossible to put the puzzle together. A true cockroach strategy is that each one carries just a little bit of food and one goes crazy trying to figure out what the entire meal is. Kind of a “viral” anti rumor strategy.

The only thing I would wonder is with the announcement 1 month before NAB, would Apple really announce an update to the ProApps or would this more along the lines of we’re selling it to the give the new company a chance to introduce the new product line at NAB?

I have no inside knowledge so I’m just throwing yet another idea onto the pile.

[Chris Babbitt] “According to Sevenmac, a new version of Final Cut Studio currently exists as an internal beta.”

As an aside, this would always be true, as it would be of any software. There is ALWAYS a beta of any software out there. The day that the company decides on the Public Release Candidate, the very next day the beta starts up on the .1 update.

There are always features and fixes that just don’t make it into any software in time for a company to commit to a full public release. So for a rumor site to say there’s a beta version of Studio out there is no big deal.

If it truly is really buggy, that could be very good news. I could, and I stress COULD mean that they’ve finally gone back and re-written the software from the ground up. Something it has badly needed to fix the media management issues and to really take advantage of the new machines.

I’m predicting a free update to FCP 6.5, etc. that will work with Snow Leopard’s new features like Grand Central and OpenCL. Just like when 4.5 was a free update to officially support HD formats.

Just looking at it from a business perspective. If I’m Apple I’d want to encourage pro users to upgrade to Snow Leopard and replace any remaining G5s with Intels. A free update to FCS is a great way to do that. Then next April they can come out with a totally revamped version.

Like Apple would go to the trouble of having an event to announce the SALE of their software to another company?

More like such “other” company would have an event to announce a major acquisition.

I think it’s more likely Apple would have an announcement a month before NAB so third party developers could announce FCS3 compatible products.

As long as Apple remains silent, third party developers can’t announce nifty new support products. With that, Apple would also have a BIG presents at NAB through all the third party developers. FCS3 an many booths and Apple doesn’t have to spend a penny on their own booth.

This announcement sets up a string of third party pre NAB announcements.

I think this is a reasonable assessment. Actually Apple often makes technological changes public with long rather than short lead times. Think of the move to OSX or the move to Intel.

It could even be, Apple announces now, developers can announce by NAB, WWDC announces the full integration with new machines, Snow Leopard, Quicktime X and release may actually not happen until after Snow Leopard ships with Quicktime X.

This makes sense too. Apple’s significant interest in the ProApps is to drive hardware sales.

Interesting that this thread is focused on the strategy rather than features. We’ve seen a million feature fantasies and wish lists. There’s no need to speculate on that.

What’s interesting is the timing of development of the rumor along with a series of events already in motion (NAB, WWDC, Snow Leopard, Quicktime X).

Someone could argue that the whole rumor is “poppycock” but silence doesn’t sell hardware and Apple needs to do somethings to drive hardware sales of the upper end of their product line.

Yep, it was a very quiet release of the new Mac Pros. They don’t even pop up in the main window on the Apple site, at least not that I’ve seen. They’re relegated to the lower section of the page.

So it’s like they wanted to get the hardware out first, then they can roll out the software announcement their own way (since they probably won’t have a booth at NAB anyway), then that’s an interesting thought on all the third party guys. If there is a big update, then Studio will be featured in all those booths instead of Apple having to rent a booth.

Could be a fun show again this year, if I could go I would.
