RED has not recorded to anything yet. It will be awhile. You might see a working Prototype NAB 2007. And yes by then the HD technology will catch up. And P2 cards in a year will be half of what they are now. Believe me Mr. Panasonic and Mr. Sony are taking notes while Mr. RED pumps up the big tent.

As you propably know, RED should be shipping December this year.
And hard disks will also get cheaper and bigger in a year and they will be a lot cheaper and bigger than solid state for at least a decade.

Either you’re young or haven’t been to very many NAB conventions, or both. Red does not currently exist. If and when it does exist, you can consider it for purchase and use. Until then, it’s a concept. Nothing more.

And as for that ship date, no ship date can be set until the product is actually in production. Anything prior to that is an optimistic guess. In most cases, a VERY optimistic guess. Perrsonally, I do hope they can actually create something close to what they’re promising, but time will tell.

Wow.. a bit condesending. With the team that is behind red I would say it’s delivery is a near certainty and within a year. If not, there will be others. Kinetta didn’t happen but SI did.

Not condescending. Honest. And realistic, unlike many of the other posts here and elsewhere that are gushing over a non-existent product. As for “the team,” none of them have ever done a camera product before, at least none that I know of. This doesn’t mean they can’t, it just means they have no track record in this area – unlike some other companies like. oh, Panasonic, Sony, Arri, Ikegami, Thomson, JVC, Canon – need I go on?

I have never been one to stifle or ignore innovation, which is why I said I hope they succeed in bringing something to market that is anything like what their preliminary specification target is. But that hasn’t happened yet, and to form opinions or purchasing plans based on such promises is to ignore the reality that there’s work to be done that can only be done with equipment you can actually buy.

So i guess that would make me dishonest and unrealistic. I always make my FUTURE purchasing plans on what I expect to be available in the future and adjust accordingly when the future arrives. So my plan stands; I use the heck out of my HVX for a year and then buy Red Or SI or whatever the guys with the “track Record ” come up with in response to what the guys with no “track record” deliver or don’t deliver. In case you didn’t notice, SI is an exsisting camera right now . All those big companies that you mention with the ” track record “, are going to have to revise their marketing plans.

I’m not so sure the $40,000 is anywhere near the mark for a cheapo guy like me.

Currently the SI camera shoots onto 2.5″ notebook drives – Red have said they are going to use sata 2.5″ drives too (as one option). So you’re talking a few hundered dollars. If they can manage to get it fitted with canon or Nikon SLR mounts then we can all use inexpensive lenses too like my $70 50mm prime. I think – and this is assuming they pull it off, you could have a fully working kit with a host of lenses for $20,000.

Mike does have a point here. If you’re making business decisions based on an unreleased product’s announced shipping date, well, that’s not necessarily wise. Look at the FireStore for the HD100 — it was announced at NAB 2005, and didn’t end up shipping until over 11 months later. And the FireStore FS-4 was how many months late? Five I think?

Keep an eye to the future, know what’s coming, and make tentative plans. But don’t count on any unreleased chickens until they’ve actually hatched.
