  • More DDR4 RAM or less DDR 5 RAM?

I am planning to upgrade my PC to i9 gen 12 for AE and PPro. The MB has an option of DDR 5, 6000 MHz. Puget systems recommends DDR 5 for 9-10% better performance. While Abode says more RAM the merrier.

My workflow involves using multiple AE dynamic link layers within Premiere pro. These layers may contain DSLR HD/4K footage, color grading, transitions, effects, color keying and multiple AE dynamic link simple animations of text , lower thirds, particles, swishes, popping icons, motion effects, tracked footage.

I have a budget to either purchase 128 GB DDR4 or 64 GB of DDR5. Any insights into which option would be more prudent? Thanks in advance.🙂

Personally, I would prioritize more RAM over faster RAM. I’d rather have longer previews and more ability to run multiple applications at the same time than a marginally faster render.

That said, there’s a third option! Buy 64 GB of DDR5 RAM now, but spring for denser modules so you don’t fill your slots. Then, down the road a little after you’ve made some money back on the machine, you can add another 64 GB if it turns out you’re feeling a little constricted on RAM.

True, I agree. Running multiple applications and real time playback is more important. I can always prepare my coffee or snooze during renders.

However, thinking about the second option, after some months the tech of DDR5 might change and mixed RAMs may cause more trouble than a solution. I may not find identical RAMs as tech evolves.
