Well the good news is that I am now doing basic projects with DVD Architect. One major hurdle is this one though… Here are the steps to illustrate the problem… I followed these steps:

    1. Make DVD
    2. Prepare
    3. Select the folder to which your project will be prepared
    4. I chose to select my external hard drive because it has 10.6 Gigs of free space and my C drive (where major programs operate out of doesnt have enough space)

However I get the warning message:

There is not enough memory in the temporary file folders for preparing the DVD.

Okay so this is a bit puzzling. I specifically directed DVD Architect to use a folder on my external hard drive which has plenty of memory. Why am I getting this message?

The estimated size shouldn’t be an issue as the entire project is only 1,421.1 MB

Very very puzzled. I don’t know how much more specific I could get about which folder I want the project to use.

Don, you don’t say how big the external drive is but my guess is that it’s very close to being full.
When that happens, all kinds of strange things such as what you’re experiencing can start happening.
BTW, DVDA needs double the project size (creates a temp folder??) when it’s doing a Prepare so your 1,421.1 MB becomes 2,842 MB. which pushes you even closer to the limit.
Hard drives are very cheap these days so your best option is to get larger drives, both for your OS and external use.

    Hi Mike:

Thanks for your kind answer. The original external hard drive is 750Gig. When I check in the section My Computer it says that I have 10.6 Gigs of Free Space on this drive. This would seem to indicate that I have tons of space left. I was thinking perhaps the folder size is the issue? I tend to agree with you that not enough space would prompt DVDA to give me that message but I am puzzled based on what I know about space left on the hard drive. I am certainly open to feedback thats for sure!

    Thanks

“The original external hard drive is 750Gig.”

    That’s a lot of data.
Is there nothing on there that you can safely delete?
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong but I remember reading somewhere that it’s not a good idea to let a drive get more than 90% or 95% full.
Your 10 gigs free works out to be 1.33% left on the drive and I suspect is the reason for the errors.

    Hi Mike:

I discovered that unbeknownst to me that Architect seemed to disguise the actual size of the .avi file that was attached to the menu etc. That file was a whopping 5 gigs. No wonder it wouldnt work. I tried DVDA on a smaller size file and it worked fine. You have to love us Newbees right?

Now for a couple more questions please now that I have hope that I can work DVDA.

    1. What is the maximum size of an .avi file that I can burn using DVDA? The Sony blank DVD I am using to burn my project to holds 4.7 Gigs

    2. Can you recommend a way to compress or reduce the size of my .avi file but still keep the quality at the “best” setting in Sony Vegas for rendering?

    Thanks very much!
