Monster Cable Ties
OK, here is a really stupid question. But its been bugging me for at least 15 years. Mostly I outfit my studio with Mogami and Canare. But I do have a smattering of Monster mic and instrument cables laying around. Monster has for years sold all their “Pro” cable with a velcro cable tie, which slides over the cable in the middle of the tie. How the hell do you use them to get a nice tight wrap on a less than 50′ cable? They seem like a terrible design, but I keep thinking I’m missing some secret to how to use them and have a nice tight wrap without looking funky.

Are you wrapping the Velcro ties around the cable 2 or 3 times before you stick the end down or just using a single loop?
Ive been using them for years even on VERY short cables…. never had a problem.

I make my own. They sell double sided velcro.It comes in rolls of 25′ or more. I cut it to length. Panduit sells mini cable ties. Poke or drill two holes in the Velcro and walah!

You’re talking about the prolink cable? The only thing I can think of is the middle stitched together part allows it to stay on the cable when unwrapped. The cable being sandwiched in the middle. Then you need to wrap the soft end around your cable slightly to one side of the sandwiched part then wrap the self-stick part to it. It works.

Not the best wrappers, prefer wider, but super cheap and I can velcro two of them together for longer versions. Can’t tell from picture but they have a hole cut out so the cable loops once through the hole and it’s held onto to your cable when unwrapped.
For quicker release i sometimes put a small wrap of gaffer tape on the end to use as a pull tab.

You can fold the fuzzy side in half under itself before wrapping it around the coiled cable. This way the tie doesn’t “hit itself” in the middle. If there’s still way too much of the hook side hanging off the end after wrapping, the tie is just plain too long for the cable.
I’m not really a fan of the “center mount” style ties in general but the rip-tie brand, heavy duty cable wraps, are by far my favorite. For the cables that are used almost daily for a significant portion of the year, anything less than the 10,000 release-cycle Rip-Tie isnt even worth the effort to mount on the cable.

Thanks guys. So Its pretty much as I thought. Monster standardized on a center mount tie which is too big for most cables and requires a less-than-elegent wrap.
