  • Monitoring “true” HD?

Posted by Rocco Rocco on September 7, 2007 at 3:30 am

We’re working on an indie feature shot in DVCPROHD 720p24 using the HVX200 (P2 cards). We have a disagreement as to whether we’re able to monitor “true” HD, and what this really means.

Our set up is as follows:

Powermac G5 connected to Samsung HDTV using the computers DVI out via a DVI to HDMI converter to HDMI in on the TV.

We then hit APPLE-F12 to “monitor” out footage on the HDTV.

We are getting to the color correct stage and I’m trying to convince my fellow film-makers that we are not seeing ‘true HD’ on the HDTV, but have yet to provide a compelling enough argument, other than mumbling something about needing an AJA Kona or Decklink type card to do it properly. I am not as technically knowledgeable as I should be.

Am I right? And if so, what do we need to do exactly?

    THANK YOU!!

Well first you need to differentiate between true HD and color accurate.

Technically any image that is larger then SD image size is True HD, and connecting through DVI to a HDTV technically douse give you an HD sized video. But it is by no means proper HD viewing especially for color correction.

For proper color correction you should send the video out through a Kona card or something similar. Or at the least a Matrox MXO.

Explain that a HDTV is not color calibrated and that anything connecting to a DVI port on the computer will not be color accurate. Different video cards will display colors slightly differently.

The big thing you should do first is distinguish between true HD and color accurate HD.

There have been plenty of posts about color accuracy that explain how it works, try a search.
