monitoring scaling on 2k+ projects

I haven’t done any project over 1080 yet on DaVinci so this is the first time this question’s come up for me.

When I set my project to, say, 2k, my 1080p monitor crops the image. Is there a setting to have it be scaled just for preview? If not, will setting my project to 1080 for grading and then switching to 2k mess with my window positioning, tracking, and keyframing?

I have been doing what Alex suggests – using the output field in the format tab. But I usually grade with the crop (i.e. with the format-output set to 2K and the config-monitor field set to 1080p) to watch for noise and softness, and switch when the client needs to see frame edges…

I would recommend setting the system res to HD, and then flip it to 2K when you are ready to render.

The main benefit is almost 50% more performance during the grade, although you do incur the cost of resizing the image to HD during the grade.

Resolve has window tracking which tracks windows, etc when you switch resolutions, or apply Input PTZR.

The alternative is to monitor as a HD crop, either at system resolution, or as output format.

Btw, what’s the difference between just setting your project to say, 1080, or setting output formatting to 1080 and working with 2k. Or, as would be a more common example, what would the difference be between working in 1080 and then setting output to 480 for SD output, or just switching project to SD and then bcak?

This is the workflow within Resolve:

Disk image -(a)- Timeline resolution -(b)- Output resolution

(a) is controlled by the timeline resolution in the config page
(b) is controlled by the resolution on the output formatting/render page

All your grades are done at the timeline resolution

I work in 2k and 4k all the time.. I keep the timeline consistent to source data and scale on the output for my display (2k or hd). For powermastering hd layoffs I change both the input and output to hd and size properly on the output formatter. As rohit noted i change everything back to 2k or 4k and render for the final.
