Monitoring audio input levels during capture
Posted by Christopher Tay on May 7, 2005 at 4:17 amHi,
I’m using Premier Pro 1.5.1 with a Decklink card and I have not been able to figure out how to set the audio meter window to display the incoming audio via the Decklink card in the Capture window. The level is coming in fine as I’m able to play it back after capturing but just need to figure out the level monitoring part.
Any advise is appreciated.

May 7, 2005 at 5:45 amThat would have to be a plugin supplied by Decklink wouldn’t it? Premiere Pro does not capture analog by itself, and there is no way to adjust the audio of DV coming in through the firewire.

May 7, 2005 at 4:32 pmThe SDI signal coming in through the Decklink card would be no different than a DV signal. It’s digital and there is really no way to “pot” inline as it’s a data dump.
If you are feeding analog audio (and video)in, you would want to put an audio board inline between the deck and the computer.
The bottom line here is that the computer is ingesting digital one way or the other, there is no level control…it’s just 1’s and 0’s by the time PPro sees it. Unfortunately, that means setting the level in the field for ingesting SDI, or setting it before the A>D conversion that the board is doing if you’re using an analog source.

May 8, 2005 at 4:43 amThanks for your replies but actually I’m not referring to adjusting the incoming audio levels. I can do that via an external audio mixer for analog audio but my question is how to monitor the audio levels with the audio meter in Premier Pro. Right now when I have the audio meter window opened, I cannot see the level jumping when I’m viewing my input source. I know the audio is coming in fine as it captures and playback properly. It’s the visual monitoring of the input level that I’m trying to figure out.
Sorry if my question wasn’t clear…thanks.

May 8, 2005 at 4:47 amThere is no way to do that. But if it is OK, why watch it? You can always just watch it after the fact using the Audio Mixer.

May 8, 2005 at 1:51 pmHi Steven,
Well, some users need some kind of visual reference to ensure that audio is indeed being received by the software. If you say that Premier Pro has no way to visually monitor incoming audio levels, then I think it is one area that needs to be addressed in future updates. How can a professional video editing software lack that basic feature ?

May 8, 2005 at 8:05 pmBut if you can’t change it, and it always works, is there really a need to worry about it? Perhaps there is, but not in my workflow.
Put in a feature request. If there are enough people requesting a feature, Adobe makes every effort to accomodate them.

May 9, 2005 at 1:02 amThe great DV capture utility ScenalyzerLive has an audio meter, albeit with unmarked bars.
