Monitor for Grading around 8K
Posted by Sebastian Cepeda on December 1, 2010 at 10:15 amHi everyone,
I’m looking for a couple of days for a “accuratley” grading monitor at about 4 to 8’000.- and I’m not sure wich one to get yet.
First of all I thought of the newest “Jvc DT-V24G1 – 24″ HD/SD Studio monitor” I even tested it and found it better than expected, but before buying that one I wanted to ask if you know any better solution?
I also thought of the ecinema FX produtcs, but the problem is that I live in Switzerland and cant test it and it also only has 8bit instead of 10bit.
Ill be working with Colors as well as Da Vinci (principally Da Vinci) if that helps with the decision. It would be nice to hear some comments.
Thanks a lot

December 1, 2010 at 4:49 pmThe JVC is a great monitor but has a 8 bit panel.
10 bit SDI processing (which the JVC has) is NOT the same as 10 bit display.
The JVC’s have 16.7 million colors = 8 bit display.A great 10 bit budget solution = HP dreamcolor with AJA HDP converter.
Broadcast 10 bit monitor solution = FSI or Barco. -

December 1, 2010 at 5:00 pmHi Thanks for your answer, I didnt know that the JVC is only an 8Bit panel, that’s my mistake.
I also thought of the FSI 10bit monitor.
https://www.shopfsi.com/FSI_24_Inch_HD_Broadcast_Monitor_p/lm-2460w.htmThe thing is I though of getting it with the 3G but then it costs 7K plus shipmment and VAT in Switzerland so ill be up the 8K and I dont even have the chance to test it out before buying it.
Do you think the viewing angle and everything is better than the JVC that I mentioned earlier?Do I need 3G to start of with? Ill be grading full HD 1080p50 and Red and 2K. Thats why I thought of getting one with 3G. What do you think?
Thanks in advance. -

December 1, 2010 at 6:35 pmPretty sure the 2460 is an 8 bit monitor. The 2470 is a 10 bit panel. It runs about $10K.

December 2, 2010 at 5:44 amsee here: https://www.flandersscientific.com/index/pg90504/da1944:2036 for a complete explanation of the bit depth of the 2460 and 2470W. Color Depth is not the significant difference between the LM-2460W and LM-2470W, put a shallow ramp on both and they will look practically identical. The real significant difference is that the 2470W has a wider native color gamut, which gives it one additional achievable color space: DCI P3. If you don’t need that, for example you normally work in Rec 709 color space, then the 2460W is certainly the better value for your money.

December 2, 2010 at 7:29 amThanks to all for the reply.
I though as I will be spending around 16K for the rest of the equimpent I dont have to spare on the wrong place and I dont want it to be the monitor.
What do you think of the “SONY PVM-L1700 17″ Full-HD LCD-Monitor”
here in Switzerland I could get it for around 10k maybe a bit less, would be the better fit for acurate colors?
I thought of the 17″ cose later on I want to do On-Set dailies with Da Vinci and maybe also storm for working with red. Thanks again

December 2, 2010 at 9:17 pmYou need to buy additional input boards for the Sony and they aren’t cheap. On top of that, the depth and weight of the monitor doesn’t make it very convenient for on-set work.

December 2, 2010 at 9:25 pmHi
Yes I know about the Slots that I need to get, the thing is I could get the monitor with the slots and the control panel and even the PVM-L23 monitor for around 12K instead of the normal 18k price.
Im trying to see if I get a demo to test it but maybe that isnt possible this time. Has anyone of you tried it out?
I compared today the BVM-L23 next to the JVC DV24 and I have to say I dont think ill be taking the JVC. next to the BVM-L it looks pretty awfull and the viewing angle was the worst Ive seen. The BVM-L23 was just great, perfect colors, great viewing angle but too pricy, I think Ill go with the PVM-L23 as sony stated it’s almost the same as the BVM but isnt LED backlight but cathod and has some less stuff to it but I think the image quality still should be pretty similar.
Right?
