    Not really an OS question:
I am thinking of buying a second hand first generation Apple 20″ Cinema Display (the one with the clear plastic surround).

What is the main difference between the older 20″ flatscreen and the newer ones (in the G5-styled cases) and is there any known issues with the earlier stock?

The older ones are ADC and the newer (metal framed) ones are DVI. Your Mac may have either ADC or DVI connectors (or both) depending on its age and what graphics card you have in it. There are known issues with every version/model of Cinema Display, but if you get a good one, they all look great.
