  • Monitor calibration: lumincance?

I have a question regarding the calibration of my new Lacie 324 monitor, using my Eye-one display 2 (gretamacbeth) calibration software/hardware.

The software allows me to input a desired luminance in candelas. They recommend a luminance of 120 cd/m^2 for LCDs, so I selected this option. After calibration, my display was very dim compared to my 2nd monitor (cheapo Dell). I then checked the specs for my Lacie monitor and it’s rated at 400 cd/m^2.

    Confusion..

So I have been googling around and it seems that a lot of people set their calibration up at 120 cd. This kind of makes sense to me for photographic work, as paper has no backlight. But I am doing video work, with the main outputs being DVD/Web.

I re-calibrated my display a second time, this time leaving the desired luminance value on ‘do not change’. The result is nice color which appears correct, and a bright display that I am familiar with.

But I am not sure if I should go back to using 120 cd. Also, as I am in a shared studio space, the ambient light isn’t as low as would be ideal.. does this affect things? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards
    John

What matters most is that your software knows what gamma and colors you have, not just your monitor alone. Most Pc’s work in 2.2 gamma, Macs on 1.8. This is separate from color balance. You can go the lut route or color management. While you’re setting it up, elimiate all ambient light and let it heat up for 20 minutes first.

If its done right, your video should looks the same everywhere.
